While exploring the wild west coast of the South Island of New Zealand, I took a day to climb the Franz-Josef Glacier. After a terrific climb up the turquoise ice in the carved out, waterfall filled mountains and an hour of hiking through the glacial valley, I was treated to a stroll through dense, fern-filled forests.

It must have been an amazing and thrilling experience, Jon, to climb up the glacier then descend into fern tree forests. Brings back memories of the climb I did on the glacier a dozen year ago. Just spent approximately two hours on the icy slopes. Thank goodness for crampons! Loved my one month trip to the northern and southern islands of NZ that included a number of tramping/bush-walking experiences.
