Description
The Mighty Mississippi has a mythic presence when you grow up in Missouri. As I ventured north to camp in the forests of Northern Minnesota, I took an impromptu detour to Lake Itaska, the official mouth of the Big Muddy. As it turned out, my timing was hilariously bad. A family of ducklings happened to be hanging out at the exact spot where the little Mississippi stream leaks out of the lake. The mother duck stood in stubborn and violent protest to my wanting to walk across the mouth of the Mississippi. I did not insist on disturbing them, but instead opted to walk across on a downed log 50 feet downstream. Who would have thought that the greatest river in North America was guarded by a duck!
